The Merrion Centre races ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire for Candlelighters and Mind

On Thursday 2nd May, The Merrion Centre, Leeds celebrated the city’s incoming Tour De Yorkshire by launching its very own version of the race; between 8.30am and 5.30pm it encouraged shoppers and colleagues to take part in its largest ever cycle challenge, ‘Get on your Bike’ which aimed to cycle the total distance of the Tour De Yorkshire on static spinning bikes- a huge 384 miles!

Working in partnership with leisure tenant Pure Gym, the shopping centre set to raise money for both company’s charity partners; Candlelighters and Mind.

Over 30 shoppers and colleagues embraced the challenge and smashed the target by lunch time in completing the 384-mile route. Cyclists continued to race ahead throughout the afternoon and achieved a distance of 582 miles and raised £128 for the charities.

Money raised will go towards Candlelighters supporting families facing children’s cancer in Yorkshire and Mind in providing advice and support to individuals suffering with mental health.

Charlotte-Daisy Leeming, Town Centre Securities (owner of the Merrion Centre) Head of CSR said; “The Tour de Yorkshire is a key calendar moment in Leeds and an exciting event for the city; we wanted to get behind it to celebrate the race finale on Sunday, whilst also supporting our charity partners and encourage our colleagues and shoppers to get involved. Our ‘Get on your Bike’ spinathon in association with Pure Gym did just that, and by working collaboratively as a team we achieved the 384-milestone target before lunch time! It drove awareness of the important work these two fantastic charities do whilst also building great engagement and excitement ahead of this weekend’s Tour de Yorkshire race”.
