MERRION CENTRE WANTS TO PUT YOU IN THE FRAME
Wed 09 Apr, 2014
To celebrate 50 years of Leeds oldest and most iconic shopping centre, we have teamed up with the Merrion Centre to launch an exciting new campaign searching for our local Picasso!
We are on the hunt for an aspiring artist to create a commemorative piece of artwork which captures the true spirit of Leeds and the Merrion Centre. When the Centre first opened its doors on the 26th May 1964, it was the largest indoor shopping centre in the UK. The winner of our competition will be awarded with £1000 cash and have the honour of seeing their art work framed and hung on the wall in the Merrion Centre on a permanent basis. This unique and original winning piece of artwork will be unveiled in the Centre on the 26th May, which is the Merrion Centre’s 50th birthday.
So if you’re a natural with a paintbrush or a dab hand with a needle and thread, show us your talents and enter your piece of artwork. The judging panel of Edward Ziff, Chairman and Chief Executive of Town Centre Securities PLC, Marjorie Ziff MBS (Mrs Arnold Ziff is a prominent patron of the arts, donating to Leeds gallery as well as numerous other arts and music organisations) a representative from the Yorkshire Evening Post and Robert Dutton http://rdcreative.co.uk/ independent art critic, will be looking for an imaginative piece of artwork which portrays the Merrion Centre’s legacy and all the city of Leeds has to offer. The winner will be notified on 22nd May and invited to attend the unveiling on Bank Holiday Monday, 26th May.
Edward Ziff, comments; “We see this as a challenge to all budding artists who really want to make a name for themselves. This is a momentous anniversary for us, we want to encourage creativity and pride and we’re delighted to be able to frame and host the winning piece of art in the shopping centre.”
All entrants must be over 16 years old and submit their work by Sunday 18th May. Artwork should be sent to 50th art competition, Merrion Centre, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS2 8NG. Please ensure all pieces of art are clearly labelled with name, date of birth and contact details.
The final piece should represent Leeds and the Merrion Centre and needs to be suitable to be in format which can be hung from a wall. For more information please email 50years@merrioncentre.co.uk
