Merrion Centre Celebrates 50th birthday

It has been an icon of our city’s shopping for decades and now the Merrion Centre is celebrating its 50th birthday.

It was the largest indoor shopping centre in the UK when it opened its doors in 1964. To mark this golden occasion on 26th May 2014 and say thank you to its loyal shoppers, the Merrion Centre is hosting a whole host of action packed activities from 12pm -5pm.

On stage there will be singers and dancers delighting shoppers throughout the day and for the excitement of younger shoppers, Peppa Pig will be making her debut Merrion Centre appearance, handing out free chocolate between 12 – 2pm. Families will also be dazzled by balloon modeling, the resident face painter, a magician and caricaturist. And if that’s not enough to keep you entertained, there will be £1000 worth of free giveaways; First Direct Arena VIP concert tickets, beauty treatments and VIP nights out are all up for grabs as well as food and drink to make sure you don’t go hungry!

Speaking about this special milestone, CEO of the Merrion Centre and TCS PLC, Edward Ziff said; “We are delighted to offer this day of non-stop entertainment and we’re inviting everyone to join in the birthday bash. We’re honoured to cater for such a diverse range of customers; from students and commuters to our loyal shoppers who have shopped here for most of their lives. We want to celebrate our customers, as much as our heritage, so as well as providing a fun day for them, we have been running a raft of competitions and initiatives, leading up to our anniversary. We’ve been moved by how many people have wanted to share with us their stories about the Centre, so we’ve created a dedicated Merrion Memories section in the Centre, in honour of our last 50 years.”

Edward Ziff and his mother, Dr Marjorie Ziff will be unveiling the winning piece of commemorative art work on 26th May at 2pm. A competition has been running for the last eight weeks, inviting budding Picasso’s to create a masterpiece to live in the Centre.

You don’t need to worry about parking for the birthday celebrations, because if you’re speedy, you’ll get parking for free. Town Centre Car Parks is offering the first 50 cars from 12pm on 26th May free parking in the Merrion Centre car park.
