New age Indian and Oriental takeaway chooses Merrion Centre for first shop

Karma Zen, a new restaurant- style Indian and Oriental take-away will open its first outlet on Wade Lane at the Merrion Centre in Leeds city centre opened this week. As well as having a comprehensive Pan Asian food menu, Karma Zen will also be the only take-away service in Leeds to deliver alcoholic drinks to the door along with food.
The restaurant quality take-away is the brainchild of entrepreneurs Kamal Miah from Leeds and his business partner Shujahat Shah, who met at university and travelled extensively together around India and the Far East to research the menu to ensure all dishes are authentic with a contemporary twist.
With starters from £2.99 and mains from £6.49, Karma Zen offers delicious curries, skewers, and tasty noodle and rice dishes with a choice of freshly-made sauces. The menu also includes some tempting exotic desserts including white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake and profiteroles with mango puree and coconut.
To accompany the meal, customers can order a bottle of Pinot Grigio, a Cobra beer or even a Pineapple Mojito as Karma Zen is licensed to serve alcohol with the food and has a good selection of wines, beers and cocktails on the menu. As well as take-out, Karma Zen offers a delivery service up to a 5 mile radius of the Merrion Centre. Delivery drivers will carry chip and pin terminals enabling easy and secure payment.
Karma Zen will also be launching their ‘Food with Peace’ initiative. The company has pledged to donate the value of the first order taken each day to a leading UK charity that helps children affected by poverty.
Commenting on the new venture, Karma Zen’s founders, Kamal and Shah said: “Creating Karma Zen has been a labour of love. We’ve wanted to offer a quality take on these two culinary favourites for a long time, so it’s very exciting to see our ambition realised here at The Merrion Centre in Leeds. We will only use British sourced meat and all our meals will be freshly cooked by our in-house chefs. We chose Leeds for our first outlet because we feel it is a natural fit with the style, taste and culture of the City. We are aware that the City has an abundance of food lovers who appreciate good food of a high standard, yet the high-end take-away market remains untouched. We aim to fill this gap by serving quality food for people to eat at home.”
Susan Mendoza, centre manager at the Merrion Centre said: “Karma Zen is a very exciting and welcome addition to the Merrion Centre’s food and beverage offer. Kamal and Shah have given take-away the restaurant touch which I’m sure will prove popular with the growing number of young professionals that live in and around the city centre.”
Karma Zen will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sunday from 5pm – 11pm and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm – 12am. Closed Mondays. Lunch offerings will be added from the new year. Call 0113 345 9999 for delivery or collection. Orders over £10 within a three mile radius will be free and orders under £10 or between three and five miles will incur a £1 charge per mile. Karma Zen accepts most credit and debit cards.
Initially Karma Zen will be serving their Indian ‘Karma’ menu and will launch their Oriental ‘Zen’ menu in mid-November.
