Seven religions celebrate Interfaith Week at the Merrion Centre
Religious groups across the country are planning a series of events in recognition of Interfaith Week. On Thursday, the Merrion Centre is inviting people from all faiths of our cosmopolitan city to take part in the religious celebrations.
Seven of the faiths which are practiced in Leeds; Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Paganism, will come together for a day of peace and enlightenment in a unique opportunity to educate shoppers and share their religious beliefs with others.
Choirs from local schools will be performing throughout the day and the Lord Mayor will be making a ceremonial special guest appearance. Each faith will have their own stand exhibiting information and literature which shoppers can take away with them.
Susan Mendoza, Merrion Centre Manager, explains; “This is our third year supporting Interfaith Week and we’re delighted to be part of this national initiative which is an informative way for people to learn, understand and celebrate the differences as well as similarities shared between our communities here in Leeds.”
With national recognition across the country, Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP, Deputy Prime Minister explains the importance of the week.
\“Inter Faith Weeks have had a tremendous impact since they first started in 2009. They inspire people of all faiths, and of no faith, to come together and help create the fair and tolerant society we all want to be a part of. The Week is a brilliant opportunity for people of different backgrounds to make new connections, find out more about each other and celebrate together the great multicultural society we have here in the UK. I hope many communities up and down the country will get involved to make this year another great success.”
