Sporting summer at the Merrion Centre

With a summer of sport currently sweeping the nation, the Merrion Centre in Leeds is making sure we’re all a part of it.

Beginning on the 3rd July and running for a whole month, the Merrion Centre has installed a screen in the main mall showcasing the Tour De France and Wimbledon. Free buns and drinks will be handed out on Saturday from 12 noon so shoppers can relax and enjoy the action.

To kick off proceedings, on Thursday 3rd July, a group of 10 people will be hosting a marathon bike ride on static bikes, cycling non-stop from 12 -5.30 raising money for cancer research.

This Saturday will also see the final showing of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at the Merrion Mini Cinema. The free, pop up cinema which was set up on the 26th May has been showcasing a range of films from over the last 50 years in celebration of the Centre’s 50th anniversary.

As soon as the Tour de France has passed through Leeds, make sure you’re in the Centre to catch the rest of the Yorkshire action. The Merrion Centre is placing bicycles inside the centre and challenging agile shoppers to get cycling in exchange for free gym membership. In a Top Gear leader board style, the fastest peddler will be awarded one-year’s free membership at Pure Gym.

Shoppers will also be privy to smashes, volleys and backhands on the big screen at this year’s Wimbledon, as Andy Murray hopes to defend his crown. With free refreshments on hand, shoppers will be able to re-create that centre court feeling in the centre of Leeds.

It’s a great honour for Leeds to be hosting the Grand Depart and here at the Merrion Centre we couldn’t resist the chance to involve our customers and get them peddling! We’re confident that our state of the art Sony screen will be well received and we’re hopeful our refreshments will add a touch of magic and relaxation to the events that lay ahead!”
