The Salvation Army to Delight Merrion Centre Shoppers with Festive Music

Courtesy of the Salvation Army, the Merrion Centre will be filled with the sound of Christmas carols every Saturday morning in the lead up to the big day itself.

Revellers of all ages will be able to hear their favourite festive tunes, played by the Salvation Army band, in the main mall between 10.30am and 1pm starting Saturday 2nd of December right up until Saturday 23rd of December.

The Salvation Army has a rich heritage of music making and hosts concerts every year with choirs and bands all over the country. Whilst playing Christmas music for shoppers, the bands will be accepting donations that will go towards local charities in Leeds including, the homeless, the elderly, and the British Legion.

Captain Glenn Furlong of the Salvation Army’s Leeds West Hunslet division, said: “We’re looking forward to playing seasonal music in the Merrion Centre throughout December. The Christmas story behind each song inspires us to reach out to people most in need in Leeds, and gives shoppers the chance to support them, too.”

Leeds West Hunslet Salvation Army, based on Hunslet Hall Road, is one of three branches in Leeds. The branch works tirelessly throughout the year to support people who are most vulnerable in the Beeston community.

The Merrion Centre has already hosted some fantastic Christmas events including the annual switch-on of the mall’s Christmas lights in November. In the countdown towards Christmas, it will continue to bring the festive spirit to Leeds with a host of other free activities. Until Christmas Eve, parents can bring their children to post their letters to Santa in a special North Pole post box. Children can also enjoy the Merrion Centre’s giant LED-lit festive Santa’s bauble Grotto where they can meet Father Christmas for free.

James Broughton, Head of Marketing and PR for Town Centre Securities, the owner of the Merrion Centre, said:

“We are delighted to welcome the Salvation Army once again to our shopping centre to get shoppers into the feel-good festive spirit, and are proud to support them in collecting donations to help the Leeds community. We want to ensure that all shoppers and visitors to our centre can enjoy a huge variety of exciting, free festive entertainment. The Merrion Centre prides itself on offering a great mix of eateries, retail and fashion outlets and we’ve worked hard to provide lots of free entertainment to ensure that we’re doing our bit to spread the festive cheer.”
