Record-Breaking Visitors Experience Vibrant Cultural Festivities

The Merrion Centre has cemented its reputation as a key cultural destination in Leeds after welcoming a record-breaking 31,698 visitors to its biggest-ever Chinese New Year celebrations.

The two-day festival, which saw a +5.45% increase in footfall compared to the previous year, delivered an electrifying atmosphere as visitors immersed themselves in a vibrant programme of traditional performances, interactive workshops, and cultural showcases.

Building on the overwhelming success of previous years, the Year of the Snake celebrations took place over two weekends, transforming the Merrion Centre into a bustling hub of entertainment and cultural discovery.

A Spectacular Showcase of Chinese Culture

Visitors were treated to captivating live performances, including the iconic Qi Lin Dance, Tai Chi demonstrations, and enchanting musical displays, alongside a stunning showcase of traditional Hanfu and Qipao fashion. Families and individuals of all ages participated in hands-on cultural activities, making it a true celebration of Chinese heritage.

The success of the celebrations was also felt by the Merrion Centre’s diverse range of tenants, who experienced an influx of new customers throughout the event.

A Growing Hub for Global Cuisine and Culture

With an ever-growing number of international eateries and businesses, including the award-winning Blue Sakura and Blue Pavilion, street food operator Eatime, Korean and Japanese kitchen and bar OBA, and the recently expanded Gordon’s Hair Salon, the Merrion Centre continues to evolve as a go-to destination for cultural experiences and global cuisine in the heart of Leeds.

James Broughton, Head of Marketing Communications at Town Centre Securities PLC, owners of the Merrion Centre, said:

The Merrion Centre continues to be at the forefront of offering diverse experiences, firmly placing us on the map as a must-visit destination in Leeds.”

Connecting Communities

The celebrations also marked the Merrion Centre’s ongoing commitment to engaging with Leeds’ diverse communities, further strengthened by its growing presence on Little Red Book (Xiaohongshu), one of China’s leading social media platforms. This digital expansion allows the Merrion Centre to connect directly with its Chinese audience, offering tailored content and exclusive updates on its events and offerings.

Cherry and Hess Cheung, managers of the specialist Taiwanese dessert operator, MeetFresh based at the Merrion Centre said,

“It was amazing to see so many people come together to celebrate Chinese New Year at the Merrion Centre. We were thrilled to introduce so many new customers to our authentic Taiwanese desserts. Events like this not only bring the community closer but also highlight the diversity and cultural richness that makes the Merrion Centre such a special place.”

The continued success of the Merrion Centre’s Chinese New Year festivities underscores its position as a dynamic hub where culture, community, and commerce come together. With an increasing number of international restaurants, specialist retailers, and cultural events, the centre is rapidly becoming Leeds’ top destination for new experiences.
