Coop To Serve Up New Food Store At Merrion Centre

Leading convenience retailer, the Co-op, is set to serve-up its newest food store in the heart of Leeds’ Arena Quarter later this Summer following a £655,000 investment that has created 12 new jobs.

Located at 11 Merrion Way, the 3,958 sq. ft store, which forms part of the Merrion Centre – will run on 100% renewable electricity – and be open to serve customers between 6am and 11pm daily.

With a free ATM, bakery, hot food and Costa coffee point, Merrion Way’s Co-op will also focus on fresh heathy produce, award-winning wines, ready meals and pizzas, free-from and vegan products, Fairtrade, food-to-go and everyday essentials.

Students who are TOTUM cardholders can pocket a 10% discount off groceries and contactless card payment limits up to £45 will be accepted, making it easier, quicker and safer to shop.

The new Co-op will also provide a funding boost locally, giving back to causes in the area through its Membership scheme, where Members receive a 5% reward on purchases of own brand products with the retailer donating a further 1% to community causes.

Over the last three years, the Co-op’s Local Community Fund has donated over £8.8m to causes and projects in Yorkshire supporting access to essential services, such as foodbanks or green spaces, improving mental and physical wellbeing or building community resilience.

Joe Scoot, Co-op’s Area Manager, said:
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to make such a significant investment right in the heart of the Merrion Centre and the team is really looking forward to serving the people living and working in the city.

Co-op is committed to connecting communities and making a difference locally, and our aim is to operate at the heart of local life. We also want customers to know that they can become a Member of their Co-op, and make a difference every time they swipe their Membership card when buying own branded products.”

Helen Green, Property Director for Town Centre Securities PLC, owners of the Merrion Centre, said:
“We are sure the opening of the Co-op will further complement our ever-growing mix of national and independent brands and we are delighted to be welcoming Co-op to our Merrion Centre family.

With an abundance of student accommodation and offices within the immediate vicinity, the store is sure to enjoy huge footfall in what is one of the busiest retail and leisure destinations in Leeds”.

The place to be…

It’s also home to the 134-bed ibis Styles Hotel, Tenpin and PureGym.

The Co-op picked up the “Convenience Retailer of the Year” and “Food-to-go Retailer of the Year” titles at the latest Retail Industry Awards.

Co-op is owned by around 4.6M active Members, and alongside Food, it operates: Co-op Funeralcare, Insurance, Health and Legal Services.
